Professional Dive Exploration at Metita Island Reveals Over 70 Untouched Dive Sites

At Metita Beach & Dive Resort, we’ve recently invited seasoned dive professional and PADI Course Director Minni Vangsgaard to conduct an in-depth exploration around Metita Island.

Minni Vangsgaard Dive Exploration

With over 14,000 logged dives and decades of global experience, Minni’s perspective provides a unique insight into the remarkable diving potential surrounding our island paradise.

Following her time with us, Minni sat down to share her impressions and discoveries. What we learned was more than just a review, it was an exciting validation of Metita’s potential as one of Indonesia’s next must-dive destinations.

Meet the Expert: Minni Vangsgaard

Minni Vangsgaard Crystal Divers Platinum PADI Course Director

1. What is your current role in Indonesia?

I’m the owner and Course Director at Bali Crystal Divers, where I’ve been training and mentoring divers for many years.

2. How long have you been diving, and how many dives have you logged?

I got certified back in 1992 in the Philippines, so it’s been 33 years now. I’ve logged 14,098 dives to date and actually celebrated my 14,000th dive right here at Metita! That moment is definitely one for the books.

3. What are some standout destinations in your diving career?

Most of my diving has been in Bali, but I’ve also dived in Denmark, South Africa, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Mauritius. The shark diving in South Africa was definitely a standout experience.

4. Do you hold any special certifications?

I’ve been a PADI Course Director since 2005, mostly at Platinum level, and have received around 30 industry awards. I was also part of the team that discovered Manta Point in Bali, a special memory in my career.

Diving Into Metita: The Exploration

Professional Dive Exploration at Metita Island Reveals Over 70 Untouched Dive Sites

1. What were your first impressions of Metita’s dive sites?

The water temperature struck me right away, consistently 29°C on every dive, which is incredibly pleasant. And the area is just so untouched, it really feels like you’re discovering something for the first time.

2. How would you describe the underwater landscape?

There’s a bit of everything, walls, slopes, pinnacles, and a lot of structure that supports marine life. And the reef fish schools are amazing. They’re everywhere.

3. How many dive sites did you identify during your exploration?

There’s easily 70+ dive sites around Metita. And I’m sure there are more still to be discovered.

4. Any personal favorites?

“Sea Month 1” blew me away, the density of schooling fish is something I haven’t seen often, and I’ve dived a lot. “Lighthouse” is another incredibly lively site. Personally though, I loved the wrecks near the airport, though they’re very deep and only suitable for advanced divers with the proper certifications.

5. Any surprises during your dives?

The sheer volume of schooling fish, it’s not something you expect in an area this remote and unfrequented. A real hidden gem.

How Metita Compares

1. How does Metita measure up to other popular dive spots in Indonesia?

I haven’t spent much time in Raja Ampat or Komodo, so I won’t make direct comparisons. But what makes Metita truly unique is the privacy. It’s one of the few places left where you can dive without seeing another group underwater.

2. Do you see Metita becoming a must-visit dive destination?

Absolutely. If you value seclusion, rich marine life, and pristine sites, Metita is a top-tier choice. I’d be more than happy to bring dive groups here in the future.

For Future Divers and Snorkelers

Thrilling Shark Diving at Metita Resort

1. What marine life can guests expect to see?

You’ll see turtles, sharks (on about 50% of dives!), various rays, and some of the best macro life I’ve ever encountered. There’s something for every diver.

2. What experience level do you recommend?

Metita caters to all, from first-time divers to seasoned professionals. It’s a flexible and accommodating environment.

3. What’s the best time to dive in the region?

So far, I’ve visited Metita between April and August, and every trip has been spectacular. I haven’t experienced the full year yet, but generally March to September is considered the best period, as it falls within the dry season.

4. How about snorkeling?

Definitely recommended! While there aren’t as many snorkel spots as dive sites, the snorkeling just off Metita’s beach is world-class.

It’s such a thrill. You descend not knowing what’s below, no maps, no expectations. Just pure exploration.
