With so much incredible marine life to explore around Morotai Island, we strive to deliver the highest level of dive service and unforgettable underwater experiences for all our guests.

The wonders of Morotai Island are waiting to be discovered!

We have already discovered around 70 dive sites but don’t yet know how many more there are to be found! You could help us explore more and even name new sites. As Morotai lies far beyond the beaten paths of Indonesia we see the exciting chance to discover unknown dive sites and ensure that they are treated in a sustainable way. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to be part of such a unique opportunity?

Dive Sites

The area of dive sites we cover reaches from Morotais’ south-eastern coast of Pandanga until the southern tip of Morotai Island with its steep walls. Along the western coast of Morotai our dive sites include Dodola Island with its beautiful corals and GaloGalo where we have the chance to dive with Mobulas (between February and May). On day trips you can discover the dive sites around the mainland of Halmahera in the Tobelo area where an underwater volcano and plenty of muck diving sites are located. Our little paradise, Metita Island, also boasts a number of dive sites that include sloping coral banks and plenty of reef sharks.

Night Diving

As recently as 2013, a new species of shark was discovered in Halmahera: the Walking Shark. Hemiscyllium halmahera uses its fins to crawl along the seabed and forage for small fish and crustaceans. The shark, which has wide horizontal stripes, grows to a maximum length of just 75cm and is harmless to humans. It is easily found at night in shallow sandy or broken coral areas. Aside from this unique creature, many other beautiful animals to be found in the dark should not be missed.

Shark Diving

From Metita Beach & Dive Resort it is just a 2-minute boat ride to the outer edge of the reef where the sandy plateaus slowly descend. Drop down to around 18m to watch an array of sharks effortlessly gliding around you in the current. To end your dive, follow the reefs looking for macro species and schools of sweetlips or mackerels.

Photography

Our dive centre offers a fully equipped camera room for individuals, groups, and the participants of workshops. There are seven camera stations in the air-conditioned room as well as a separate station with a diving cylinder and nozzle attachment, which can be used to dry your camera housing.

Wreck Diving

For experienced divers with a deep diving certification, Morotai offers an exceptional opportunity to explore WWII wrecks lying between 35 to 50 meters. These historical sites include two Bristol Beaufort bombers from the Australian Air Force, trucks and jeeps from the same era, and two Mitsubishi “Zero” fighter planes—one still remarkably intact. These are challenging dives due to depth and occasional low visibility, and are only conducted under strict supervision and conditions assessed by our dive team.
For a more accessible experience, the Susi Wreck, a confiscated fishing vessel deliberately sunk in 2019, lies within recreational limits and is suitable for all certified divers.
